Welcome to Year 5!
A very warm welcome to Year 5, superheroes in training!! We have 31 extremely hardworking
pupils and 3 hardworking members of staff in our class this year. The start of the year will be very
busy as always with challenging times ahead, however we will strive to work hard and aim to
have a wonderful time in school as we progress with our learning.
In our Literacy lessons this term the children will start to read a fantastic book by Michael
Morpurgo entitled ‘War Horse’. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army
and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he
charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the
desolation of the trenches, Joey’s courage touches the soldiers around him. In the
spring term, we will be moving onto a new story that will be guaranteed to excite the children just
as much as this story will.
In Maths for the first term, we will be working hard on our number work, linked to the school
calculation policy. The children have already shown off their wonderful numbers skills in Year 4
such as addition and subtraction, with numbers in the hundreds and thousands in some cases
and also with multiplication and division. These skills will be put to the test in Year 5 and being as
though we are superheroes in training, the children will be expected to persevere and show the
other children and members of staff at Rivers that they are determined to do whatever it takes to
succeed in Maths.
Our Topic work is split into two this term. In Science, we will be looking at how to improve our
science investigation skills with a focus on materials and their properties. Do you know your
solids from your liquids and gases Year 5? We will be doing a lot of scientific experiments, so get
your goggles on and prepare to get investigating!! In History and Geography, the children will be
learning about what life was like in World War One and all of the catastrophic events surrounding
it. The children will be using their map skills to learn about different countries in Europe as well
as developing their skills to construct timelines and write non-chronological reports about
weapons in World War One.
Some of our children in Year 5 will be doing extra PE and swimming lessons during our
enrichment afternoons. When the spring term arrives the rest of the children will be doing these
exciting activities and many more over the rest of the year.
We will also be trying out new things in our ICT lessons and learning how to design our own
small game by programming it ourselves. Exciting and challenging times are ahead Year 5 as
you train to become the superheroes of Rivers!!
